Championing Community Broadcasting
1 January 2010
Community broadcasters are a key part of the public broadcasting landscape. Community broadcasters need to be strengthened to play an active information, education and entertainment role at the local level. Over the years community broadcasters have been suffering from governance challenges and lack of resources.
The Ministry of Communications has promised to launch a broadcasting policy review before the end of 2011. The review will look at all three tiers of broadcasting including community, public and commercial. the process will lead to amendments to existing legislation and to some entirely new legislation for the sector.
SOS Coalition/ Right 2 Know Campaign Workshop with Community Broadcasters
The SOS Coalition in partnership with the Right 2 Know Campaign ran a workshop in September 2011 to inform community broadcasters about the policy review and to get them involved in shaping the new legislation both for the broadcasting sector.
The plan is for community broadcasters to ran talkshows in their communities about public broadcasting and the importance of strong public broadcasters in our daily lives.
The SOS Coalition has put together a pack of resources to assist community broadcasters to run their talkshops. Community broadcasters have also been asked to produce their own resources on the topic. See "audio clip library" for a sample of these resources.
