The SOS: Support Public Broadcasting Coalition is of the view that it doesn’t make sense for the Department of Communications (DoC) to be tabling the Electronic Communication Amendment (ECA) Bill now as it should be reviewed as part of the Broadcasting policy review process, which the Minister of Communications stated that she will be initiating. This follows reports that the DOC plans to introduce the Electronic Communication Amendment Bill and the Independent Communication Authority of SA (ICASA) Bill by March this year.

According to Robert McChesney public broadcasting is supposed to mean “that they’re doing something in their broadcasting they would not do if they were simply out to maximize profit; if they were really public service institutions, not purely profit maximizing institutions”. This is the SABC we should strive for!

OUR SABC: A review of South African Broadcasting Issues

OUR SABC is an SOS initiative. It is a newsletter that tables and debates Public broadcasting issues. The newsletter hopes to not only encourage debate but create a better and more effective public broadcasting environment in South Africa and Africa.

What is on the table this week?

• Changing Faces: there is a new CFO at the SABC
• Operations at the SABC, who is going to be the next COO of the SABC?
• “Smoking the peace pipe”…. Mwasa and the SABC reconcile
• Finances, FINANCES, finances: Is the SABC ever going to be financially stable!
• The independent broadcasting regulatory review…is this not placing the ‘cart before the horse’?

Polity.org.za - Statement: Comms Minister on media reports on the SABC and SAPO - 30 Jan 2012

The Minister of Communications, Ms Dina Pule, became aware of the process that the SABC intended to follow to appoint a Chief Operating Officer for the broadcaster. The Minister immediately requested the Board to suspend the current search and to follow a normal and wider executive appointment process.
